Radiological evaluation of perinatal and childhood stroke

Pilvi Ilves (Estonia)
Head of the Radiology Clinic, Tartu University Hospital
Biography: Pilvi Ilves is internationally known as an expert in pediatric neuroimaging, especially stroke imaging. Her current research focus is perinatal and genetic risk factors in pediatric stroke, acute and chronic radiological findings of stroke predictive in outcome of pediatric stroke patients. Her resarch groups includes several doctoral students interested in reorganization and brain plasticity after pediatric stroke. The focus of research is to find correlations between functional magnetic resonance imaging findings and neurocognitive and language outcome of stroke patients. The aim of the research is to find radiological signs which provide child neurologists and other rehabilitation specialists with a better understanding about the need for rehabilitation, as well as about prognosis of stroke patients.

Presentation

Stalker Hall

Synopsis: The lecture is about pediatric stroke with different vascular etiology in different ages. Stroke with different vascular etiology has also differences in etiology and patogenesis. The talk provides information about radiologial findings which can indicate genetic etiology of the disease. Stroke with genetic etiology in children has high recurrence rate which can lead to early intracranial hemorrhage and which usually is connected with poor neurodevelopmental outcome. The lecture provides information about acute and chronic findings in pediatric stroke with different vascular etiology. It is important that radiologists provide child neurologists and with information about the early radiological signs which are connected with severe brain damage and poor neurodevelopmental prognosis. Based on this information physiotherapists and speech therapists can evaluate the need for early rehabilitation in stroke children.
