Synopsis: Differentiating enlarged parathyroid glands preoperatively may be challenging in conventional B-mode ultrasound (US). Contrast-enhanced US (CEUS) is a safe, nonionizing imaging method that has many applications with sensitivities and specificities equal to or greater than CT and MRI. The use of CEUS, along with other ultrasound modalities may help differentiate between parathyroid adenoma and hyperplasia prior to surgery in patients with hyperparathyroidism.
